How to Clean Your Glasses
Make sure to always wet your lenses with lens cleaning solution first. Wiping dry lenses will embed any foreign particles into the lenses causing them to scratch. Never use Windex or other glass cleaners on your lenses since these will destroy any protective coatings; use eyeglass specific cleaners only. Use only a soft cotton or micro fiber towel to dry your lenses. Any tissues or other paper products will scratch your lenses since they contain wood fibers. If you have an anti-reflective coating, wet and dry lenses twice to remove any streaking that may occur. Make sure the cloth you use for your glasses is only used for that purpose so that you don’t add more dirt and debris to your lenses. Wash the glasses-only cloth in plain soapy water, no antibacterial or lotion soaps as these may destroy lens coatings. Please see your optician if you have any further questions about proper lens cleaning.
What is the difference between an Optometrist, Ophthalmologist and Optician?
Do you ever get these terms confused? So do most people. Below are the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definitions for these terms.
Optometrist a specialist in the health care profession concerned especially with examining the eye for defects and faults of refraction, with prescribing correctional lenses or lens exercises, with diagnosing diseases of the eye and with treating such diseases or referring them for treatment.
Ophthalmologist is a specialist in a branch of medical science dealing with structure, functions and diseases of the eye.
Optician is a maker or dealer in optical items and a person who reads prescriptions for visual correction, orders lenses, and dispenses eye glasses.
What is a Routine vs. a Non-Routine Visit?
A Routine visit is an appointment to check the general eye health and check your prescription to see if there are any changes. At routine visits you may feel some changes in your vision which caused you to call and book an appointment or you may have received a reminder postcard in the mail that you are due for your routine visit. Patients that wear only glasses need to be seen every two years. Contac lens patients need to be seen every year to check the health of the eye in coordination with the contact lenses since contacts fit directly onto the surface of the eye.
Non-routine visits are when you wake up in the morning and have discovered a recent eye problem, such as are listed on our Urgent Appointment page. Other non-routine visits would be anything connected to a medical problem you experience, such as allergies, vision alterations due to diabetes or high blood pressure and many other medical issues.
If you have any questions about whether your visit is considered routine or non-routine please contact our office or call your insurance company.
